ICKENHAM’S ‘VINEGAR’ BIBLE

Descendants of a former churchwarden of St Giles’ Church contacted ICN, recently, about a rare Bible they had found in their Devon attic. Alan Greenwood Burr was in office during the 1930s and, earlier than this, his father had bought from the Church a disused Bible that had been in regular service there for 140 years. It turned out that this was a 1717 James Basket ‘Vinegar’ Bible so called because one of its many misprints called the parable of the vineyard, the parable of the vinegar. The Bible was presented to St Giles’ Church in 1734 by the then Squire of Swakeleys who was the famous Sir Robert Vyner. An inscription, on its flyleaf, authenticates its provenance. The Bible went to auction, during April, with a reserve of £2,000. Mint copies have been known to fetch some £8,500. We still don’t know whether the Bible was sold. Alan’s wife, Eliza Goodyear Burr, presented our current reredos to the church in memory of her mother and the family grave lies alongside the path by the main entrance porch.
