MORE ON THE RUKIGA PROJECT & WORLD VISION

A health worker trains volunteers on improved sanitation in homes. The Community Health Workers have played a great role in disseminating health information

WORLD VISION is an international non-governmental organization that carries out relief and development work focusing especially on the needs of children. Its mission is to follow our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ in working with the poor and oppressed, to promote human transformation, seek justice and bear witness to the good news of the kingdom of God.

World Vision pursues its mission through integrated holistic commitment to transformational development, that is community based and sustainable, focused especially on the needs of children.

World Vision started its operations in Uganda in 1986 at the time when the country was recovering from repeated political conflicts and socio-economic upheavals. Spiritual and moral degradation was evident throughout the country. The number of orphans, widows and displaced people threatened by death was immense.

RUKIGA has a population of 43,266 (20,882 males and 22,384 females). The dominant ethnic group in the County is Bakiga.  Other ethnic groups present include, Banyarwanda, Bahororo and Banyankole. The main religious groups in the area are :- Catholics (around 45%) and Anglicans (about 54%). Other religions roughly 0.63% and other Christians 0.14%.

Administrative units
Rukiga ADP is divided into two sub counties with 12 administrative parishes, which comprise 123 villages. The sub-county, like the rest of Uganda, has local government system referred to as local council (LC) Village (LC I), Parish (LC II). The community elects the council leaders who are accountable to the people. The ADP deliberately facilitates forums to engage local councils, the community project committees, and staff in strategic planning for the area.

Rukiga County like other parts of Kabale District is under the decentralization system where the local councils are the policy-making organs within their area of jurisdiction. They identify local problems and find solutions to them, formulate and review development plans and initiate programs for the development of basic infrastructure and social services.

 SWAKELEYS HOUSE SHIELD 2007

ICKENHAM RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION COMMITTEE RECOGNISED

The Swakeleys House Shield for 2007 has been presented to the Ickenham Residents’ Association Committee.  Its President, Peter Howe, is seen here receiving the Shield on behalf of the Association’s Committee from the Mayor of Hillingdon, Cllr. David Routledge. This is the first time that this coveted award has been made to a group of people rather than to an individual and is a tribute to the high regard in which the Association is held.

The Swakeleys House Shield was donated by the management of Bristol-Myers in 1986 when they were in occupation of Swakeleys House.  It was entrusted to the Ickenham Festival Committee to give the Shield to anyone whom they judged to have contributed to the Ickenham community in the spirit of the Festival.

The first recipient was David Millen who had by then chaired the Festival Committee since its inception ten years earlier.  Subsequently, the Shield has been awarded seventeen times, most frequently to individuals who have contributed in a special way to the Festival.  However, other proud holders have belonged to Ickenham organisations such as the Scouts, Vyners Swing Band, Ickenham Church News and the Village Hall Association.  Twice, the Shield has been awarded to husband-and-wife teams for their work in the community.

The citation for the Residents’ Association Committee mentioned that, since formation in 1924, it has worked tirelessly as Ickenham's watchdog.  In particular, it has vigorously challenged developments adverse to the character of Ickenham, helped to protect our amenities and encouraged an active community spirit.

Receiving the Shield on behalf of the Association, Peter Howe remarked that it was a great honour for the Association to be the first to receive a group award and a privilege to have been closely associated with the Festival for so many years.

The presentation occurred on 10th March at the Ickenham Festival Family Barn Dance at Vyners School.  Over 200 enthusiastic dancers of all ages participated in an extremely lively evening’s entertainment.

Alan Noad

In an interview with ICN Peter Howe said, “The IRA Committee is very grateful that its efforts and achievements have been recognised and are leading to the preservation and enhancement of our community of Ickenham.”
