SHARE YOUR LIFE – SPARE A KIDNEY

 Donor Nikki Summerfield

I recently donated a kidney to a friend of mine. We are both doing very well and everything is working out fine.

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank the staff at Hammersmith Hospital for looking after us so well.  I’d also like to thank all the people who have sent us their best wishes and those, both family and friends, who have helped out in various ways, from running the children around to weeding the garden in Almond Avenue.  All the help has made my recovery a speedy one.

The gap between the number of people who need transplants and available donor organs is getting ever wider.  Therefore I would like to ask those of you who already carry donor cards to make sure your family are aware of your wishes while you are fit and well.  For those of you who haven’t registered please do think about it.  Also if, like me, you are in a position to help someone by being a live donor and would like more information, you can contact the National Kidney Foundation on 01909 487795 or on www.kidney.org.uk/living-donor/  It has only taken a couple of months out of my life to help a friend who would otherwise have had to spend endless hours on dialysis, or would ultimately have lost her life.
