WEA PROGRAMME 2007/2008

The new courses for 2007/2008 provide another varied and stimulating programme arranged by the Ruislip and Uxbridge branch of the WEA (Workers’ Educational Association).  Some old favourites are joined by a number of new courses, as well as another evening course on ‘Film Studies’ for those otherwise busy during the day.  All courses take place at the Compass Theatre in Ickenham, starting on 24th September, and are detailed here.

Monday Morning: ‘Exploring Musical Genres’, Afternoon: ‘History - The Cross and the Crescent 1095-1500’ and ‘Birdwatching Through the Seasons – Winter Birds’

Tuesday Morning: ‘Beginners Guide to the Stockmarket’ and ‘Archaeology of Ancient Rome - Republic to Empire’, Afternoon: ‘Introduction to Art History’

Wednesday Morning: ‘The Art and Architecture of the Medieval Parish Church’ and ‘Literature – Outsiders and Misfits’, Afternoon: ‘Political Ideas and Movements’, Evening: ‘Theatre Studies – Plays in Performance’

Thursday Morning: ‘Geology of the Chilterns and South East England’, Evening: ‘Film Studies – Interrogating Film’

Friday Afternoon: ‘Digital and Traditional Photography’

Students can attend the first lesson on any course free of charge, to make sure that it is to their liking. So why not come along to try any of the courses that take your fancy?

The WEA brochure contains full details of the courses arranged by all the London branches and is available in local libraries and bookshops. If you are not able to find a brochure or want more details about the courses listed here, then please contact Robert Hardman on 01895 632774.

4th SUNDAYS AT 5

Starting on September 23rd at 5pm, we have the first of a new series of informal worship times.  Held in St Giles’ Church Hall, on the fourth Sunday of every month, each occasion will be arranged by a small team from both churches.  It is open to anyone from either church, or from no church at all.  The idea is to deal with 21st Century issues in a way that enables people to interact and share their experiences, hopes and concerns, and explore how the Bible addresses these.  No longer than 45 minutes, plus light refreshments; all ages are positively welcomed.

HILLINGDON CHORAL SOCIETY

The new season of Hillingdon Choral Society commences on Monday 3rd September at 7.45pm at Ickenham URC, Swakeleys Road.  The society will be working towards their November concert - Karl Jenkins’ 'Requiem'.  New members are particularly welcome at the start of the season.  More details from Pam Currin on 01895 677149.

SUMMER FORECOURT SALE

Coming soon is the Late Summer Forecourt Sale at the URC on Saturday 8th September, 10am to 12 noon.  Admission is free and you will be able to buy home-made cakes and preserves, books, bric-a-brac, DVDs, CDs, videos, etc.  If you have items to donate, please bring them to the church on Friday 7th September between 6pm and 8pm or phone Richard Piper on 01895 634348.

SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD SURGERIES

We have been asked by PCSO Michelle Bayliss to advise readers of the new time and location for this local policing initiative.  Michelle and her fellow members of the Ickenham Safer Neighbourhood Team will be available from 7pm to 8pm on the third Wednesday of every other month for an Open Surgery at Ickenham Library in Community Close.  This is an opportunity to discuss any local community policing issue with the team.  The next surgery is on 19th September, then on 21st November.  For further details, contact Michelle on 07909 534633.
