A truly rousing outdoor concert was enjoyed by an enthusiastic audience of several hundred at Swakeleys House on July 14th. Presented by the Hillingdon Philharmonic Orchestra, in conjunction with the Ickenham Festival Committee, it consisted entirely of good old British music. Peter Williams, choirmaster and organist for the URC, conducted the orchestra, which he had originally founded. Perry Parsons compered the evening. The audience provided the singing for Rule Britannia and Jerusalem (more gusto than vibrato), hog roast was on the menu and the weather was kind. The programme also included works by Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Sullivan and Handel. It was to the latter’s ‘Music for the Royal Fireworks’ that a stunning display of pyrotechnics was let loose, continuing on through the final rendering of Eric Coates’ ‘Dambusters’ March’. An evening to savour!

Simon Goodall enthralled his sell-out audiences at the Compass Theatre in July with his one-man re-enactment of a Busy Night as a taxi-driver. Simon is a talented actor who, when he is ‘resting’, earns his living as a taxi-driver in Ickenham. The show was a preview to subsequent presentations at the Edinburgh Festival. Speaking from Edinburgh he said, “I was taken aback by the two nights which were a sell-out. A wonderful start to the run-up to Edinburgh. The show is growing and attracting strong interest in and amongst the 2000 live shows every day. Thank you Ickenham and all those who came to see the first previews at the Compass”.
