Ickenham is about to get its first Toucan crossing in Swakeleys Road by Thornhill Road. A Toucan crossing is one that can be used by cyclists and pedestrians and is signal-controlled. Swakeleys Road’s crossing is unusual insofar as it incorporates a ramp in the centre of the road to accommodate the considerable height difference between the dual carriageways at this point.
Other forms of crossing are: the familiar Zebra, which is not signal-controlled; the Pelican, with the “green man” signal; the Puffin, similar to the Pelican but more sophisticated with detection units; and the Pegasus, with signals which allows horses (and their riders) to cross in safety.
Our Toucan is being built by LBH term contractors Accord MP, with signals installed by Tfl - all coordinated by the Traffic Section of LBH.
URC JUMBLE SALE AND MORE!
The URC Fundraising Committee has been looking back over a successful 2007. There were many fun events and proceeds of over £7,500, which benefited a number of good causes, including the Mission Aviation Fellowship and the 2nd Ickenham Scout Group Jamboree Fund. We would like to thank all of you who donated items and generally supported our events. Many local traders came to our assistance, including Castlewick Estate Agents, the new sponsors of our Christmas Fayre.
Plans for 2008 are well in hand, and key dates to note are as follows:
Mar 29th Spring Jumble Sale
May 3rd Plant / Book Sale and Auction
June 7th Festival Forecourt Sale
Sept 6th Late Summer Forecourt Sale
Sept 27th Autumn Jumble Sale
Nov 15th Christmas Fayre
We are hoping to have a second Auction in the autumn for commission sales only, so watch out for further details on that.
In the meantime, we hope to see lots of you at the first of these events, our Spring Jumble Sale in the URC Church Hall on Saturday 29th March. It will be from 10am to 12 noon and admission is FREE. If you have items to donate, please bring them to the Church Hall between 6pm and 8pm on Friday 28th March, or phone Richard Piper on 01895 634348 if you need them to be collected.
There are vacancies at Abbeyfield the ideal home for retired, single persons looking for local, comfortable, and friendly accommodation in Ickenham. Situated in Court Road with a palatial garden, it consists of a variety of bed-sitters, each with en-suite facilities. The place is kept immaculately by Housekeeper Rose Coniam and her weekend colleague who prepare two square meals a day for the residents. If you’d like to know more, contact Abbeyfield Chairman Derek Hughes on 01895 624414 and/or read the article in ICN June, 2007. (Earlier copies of ICN can be viewed on our website at www.ickenhamchurchnews.co.uk.)
It is good to see that the Village Pond is looking in better shape since its recent clean up by the Council.
Peter Rayner has asked us to pass on thanks to those people who collect small change in Children’s Society boxes at home. When he gathered in and emptied the boxes recently, a grand total of £277 was raised and a cheque for that amount was sent to the Society’s London office.
If anyone who does not have a box would like one, please contact Peter on 01895 637204.
Receipt is acknowledged, with grateful thanks, for donations towards the cost of ICN, from:
Anon of Ivy House Road via Shirley Bradburn, National Trust, Anon of Bushey Road.
Please note that copy for the April edition of ICN should be with the team by 12 noon on 13th March. Meanwhile, the ICN team wish you a very Happy Easter.
